Breaking change in Windows XPSP2 (does it break ICE?)

Folks

I just read today that Windows XP SP2 removes the ability to use raw sockets directly (I don't have a direct link but I found a post related to that here:
http://www.interact-sw.co.uk/iangblog/2004/08/12/norawsockets).

This is probably going to affect ICE running under these conditions, right?

  • A follow-up to my own message. Maybe I got this wrong -- the post was talking about "raw" sockets, not berkeley sockets. Apparently there is a difference that I didn't know about. Anyway just thought I'd pass it along just in case.
  • I heard SP2 also staggers outbound TCP/IP traffic if it's above the normal level. I wonder what kind of effect it will have on ICE clients that pump heavy amount of data.

  • Ice doesn't use raw sockets, so this change doesn't affect us. We'll have to benchmark Ice with service pack 2 to see whether there is any performance impact (but I'd be surprised if there would be any).
